Process Paper
In August of 1945, the whole world stood still. The U.S had used the first and hopefully last nuclear weapons in human history on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. These two bombings were advent of what could have been mankind’s final stage: self-destruction. First the first time in human history, man had possessed the ability to destroy himself. That is why the topic I have selected is so important. While it may seem apparent that nuclear weapons are inherently bad, nuclear weapons have actually prevented larger scale and more potentially destructive wars from carrying out. This was due to the concept of the mutually assured destruction, or in other words, everyone loses.
My research was conducted through a variety of sources, which include the 2008 U.S CRS Report on U.S Nuclear Weapons, Henry Kissinger’s Nuclear Weapons and Foreign Policy, David E. Hoffman’s The Dead Hand and internet sources. The sources were helpful in my project and devising my thesis because the provide an extensive qualitative analysis of nuclear weapons and their influence on foreign policy, diplomacy, and culture
I selected individual website as my presentation category because it is best for the audience to be able to navigate and interact with video and audio as well as images to truly have an understanding of the importance of the nuclear age
My project relates to the NHD theme because the cold war and wars alongside the cold war have been greatly influenced by the threat of nuclear weapons since the world’s encounter with Nagasaki and Hiroshima. It if only takes two nuclear strikes to stop a world war, it would take just as much to start one. My project will also examine the exploration of mankind’s exploration nuclear technology and how they had an impact on the global scale in the 20th century.
